LIBERTY DEVITTO ENDORSES MAPEX DRUMS
NASHVILLE, TN — June 29, 2004 — Mapex Drums recently announced the signing of drummer Liberty DeVitto to an exclusive Mapex endorsement. An original, twenty-seven year member of Billy Joel’s band, DeVitto now plays Mapex Drums exclusively at all live performances and on all studio recordings. DeVitto is playing a 7-piece Mapex Saturn Pro drum kit, a combination of Walnut and Maple shells; the drum set also includes a Black Panther snare as well as Janus Hardware.
"It only took me a couple of minutes playing to realize these drums really sounded and felt good," exclaimed DeVitto. “ One of the biggest issues is the stuff down below [the pedals] and the Janus bass drum pedal and hi-hat felt like that really comfortable pair of shoes."
DeVitto also explained that he was impressed by Mapex’s support of up-and-coming drummers and the drumming profession in general. “Mapex really supports and promotes all types of music and players—not just the flavors of the month—and I appreciate that. At Woodstick 2004 (in Tacoma, WA in February), Mapex was the only drum builder sponsoring what was probably the pre-eminent drumming event in the Northwest this year.”
DeVitto’s drum configuration includes a 22" x 18" bass drum, a 14" x 51?2" Black Panther Snare drum, two floor toms (14" x 14" and 16" x 16"), and three rack toms of 10" x 8", 12" x 9" and 13" x 10". DeVitto is also using Mapex’s Janus professional hardware, including the Janus Bass Drum Pedal and the Janus Tilt Hi-Hat Stand.
"We spent a considerable amount of time to find Liberty the perfect drum set for his style of playing,” stated Joe Hibbs, Mapex Artist Relations Director. “He has very specific needs and our wide range of products were there to fulfill them. We were able to offer him a complete palette of drums and hardware to choose from; Liberty and I worked closely together to get him his ideal drum set.”
DeVitto has been a New Yorker his whole life, born in Brooklyn in 1950, growing up on Long Island and today living back in Brooklyn. His first big gig came when he filled in for Mitch Ryder’s ailing drummer for a three-week tour at the age of eighteen. Back on Long Island after the tour, DeVitto recorded in a studio for the first time with local icon Ritchie Supa, and toured the U.S. with Supa until a nearly fatal car accident left DeVitto unable to play the drums for over a year. After recovering from his injuries, DeVitto joined Topper, a Long Island wedding band at the time. The band worked locally for three years, playing all original material; the group consisted of DeVitto on drums, Doug Stegmeyer on bass, Russell Javors on guitar and vocals, Howie Emerson on guitar and dobro. Topper, with the addition of sax player Richie Cannata, eventually became Billy Joel’s band. Twenty-seven years later, DeVitto is still with Billy Joel. He has played on all of Joel’s studio albums and countless world tours; his drumming has become legendary worldwide.
When not working with Joel, DeVitto’s new love is that of his band The Funk Club. Comprised of local musicians in Orlando, Florida, including Kyle Henderson (vocals), Tommy Calton (guitar), and Larry Jacoby (bass), The Funk Club brings a funk and groove element to some great classic rock music.
